About Us

Church History

Kadesh Missionary Baptist Church was founded on a vision, determination, prayer, and faith in God.  This vision was that of our founding pastor, the late Rev. Dr. James H. Williams, Jr.  In 1977, Pastor Williams, his wife Lois Williams, along with a hand full of faithful members, left Aijalon Baptist Church and set out to form a church of refuge.  Services were briefly held at the Stinson Funeral Home on W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit.

Being lead and blessed by God, the purchase of a place of worship was realized at 12000 Grand River Avenue in Detroit, and bore the name “Kadesh.”  Kadesh was a city of refuge for the Israelites, and it means consecrated, sanctified, and hallowed. Under the leadership of Pastor Williams, a foundation was laid that we have continued to build upon to date.

On Good Friday April 9, 1982, Pastor Williams made his transition from life to glory.  His Kadesh family was shocked and sadden by his passing.  Needing to navigate through these difficult and turbulent waters, Kadesh continued to “… lift our eyes to the hills, from whence comes our help, knowing that our help comes from the Lord.”  On Easter Sunday Rev. Dr. Gregory L. Foster, Sr. assumed the responsibilities as pastor, and was installed soon after.

With God leading us every step of the way, the church was able to burn the mortgage of its first edifice in just two short years in December of 1984.  Because of God’s favor, a new building was needed to continue the work of advancing God’s kingdom.  Thus, we relocated to 14500 Greenfield on September 29, 1985.  The new community welcomed us and our growth accelerated.

Over the next several years, the need to expand the support to our members and the surrounding neighborhood grew.  We added a second worship service, increased sanctuary seating, and built a gymnasium.  In January of 1994, Kadesh was able to accommodate its vast number of youth by starting a Youth Church.  Because of our faithfulness to God’s will, we were able to burn the mortgage on Greenfield in July of 1993.

As God continued to bless us, a larger facility was required to continually minister to and meet the needs of the community and our church family.  Late in the year 2000, our Pastor was given a vision that would again move Kadesh to another level.  It was a long road that started with us having services first in the auditorium of the University of Detroit.  Then, in a tent on the parking lot of our new property. Lastly, before the completion of our sanctuary, in the fellowship hall.  All were not meant to make this journey with us, but those who did remained “… steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor was not in vain in the Lord.”   On Thanksgiving Day in the year 2001, we had our first service in the sanctuary of our current location on Plymouth Road.  Our new edifice has a 1,500-seat sanctuary with overflow capabilities of above 2,000, fellowship hall, multiple classrooms, and a chapel.

This new home offered Kadesh the opportunity to minister in a whole new way.  As God enlarged our territory, He also enlarged our responsibility.  “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”  God’s grace allowed us to serve better through registering and operating as a non-profit, the creation of a senior’s ministry, a prison ministry, a food pantry, a community outreach team, amongst others.  Also, being committed to Christian Education, Kadesh developed and houses the Greater Excellent Ministry School, and began going on several pilgrimages and educational trips to places like Africa, Israel, Italy, and Turkey.

With this growth, it empowered the membership body to experience all the gifts of the Holy Spirit which the Lord has provided, enabled many of our ministers to go on to become senior pastors themselves, and allowed us to reach a whole new generation of worshippers.  Thus, it was during this season that God led Pastor Foster to simply call us Kadesh Baptist Church.

In 2005, we joined a new fellowship, the Interdenominational Assemblies of Church (I.A.C.).  On October 10 of that same year, Pastor Gregory L. Foster, Sr., was consecrated to the office of Bishop under the leadership of Bishop Andre Woods and Bishop Charles Craig.  In the year 2008 Bishop Foster was elevated to the position of Presiding Prelate of I.A.C.  Now, Kadesh sits as the hub of more than 10 churches.

In 2011, a plan was put in place at Kadesh to once again transfer the leadership responsibilities.  This plan was twofold, beginning with the appointment of Rev. Gregory Lewis Foster, II to the position of Co-Pastor.  Followed by Bishop Foster naming him the Presiding Pastor of Kadesh Baptist Church in 2016.  In 2018, Pastor Greg became Senior Pastor of Kadesh Baptist Church.  Since that time, he has moved this congregation in a mighty way, as he preaches and teaches with the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

God has blessed Kadesh with many years, and it is our prayer He continues to bless us with many more as we stay faithful to our assignment in God.  With this we thank our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ because we know “we’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord, and trusting in His Word.”

Kadesh Vision Statement

The Kadesh Baptist Church, as a Holy Place of God, pledges to be:
†  a center of Christian Education.  We will equip every believer for ministry by teaching the unadulterated truth of Christ’s saving power; and while doing so, help both the young and old discover and apply the gifts and talents God has entrusted to them.
†   a center of Civil Outreach.  We will reach our city, our nation and our world with dignified outreach; providing a safe haven where the hurting and disenfranchised can find forgiveness, support, and wise counsel.
†  a center of Evangelism.  We will share the Gospel of Jesus Christ humbly, boldly and passionately with the lost through God’s wisdom and strength to advance the Kingdom of our Savior.
†   a center of Worship.  We will be a welcoming community that values diversity while offering a dynamic, life-changing worship and praise experience.

Five Areas of Involvement

1. Consistent Givers
are those who give regularly and sacrificially to the church by being dependable even when absent; “to give cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel throughout all nations”
2 Cor 9:6-8But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.

2. Ministry Workers
are those who give their time and talents faithfully to serve as an usher, as a choir member, as a youth worker, etc. . .
Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

3. Consistent Worshippers
are those who are loyal and devoted in their attendance.
John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

4. Lifelong Learners
are those who are dedicated to furthering their Christian Education by attending Sunday school, Bible class, Greater Excellence Ministry School (GEMS), etc.
2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

5. Soul Winners
are those who are zealous in their efforts to advance the Kingdom of our Savior by evangelizing their families, friends, and the lost.
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
